Weymouth Assisted Living

Replaciing the (then) existing old Fire Station, the proposal site was a prominnent key feature on the approach towards the original old town and Portland Hill. The design approach adopted was to form a distinct demarcation between the old and the new - to the rear the proposals would address the original Upper High Street. In conjunction with the engaged Heritage Consultant, it was agreed that we should not seek to mimic the existing character but enhance the historic quality of the original by creating a distinctly contemporary design.

The proposals sought to follow the sweeping line of the road system, creating a modern terrace of townhouse proportions to address the harbour aspect. A striking central feature structure would accommodate the vertical circulation whilst also bearing referennce to the existing appliance tower. To the rear, as it addresses the old High Street, the design aim was to retain the original line of the street by creating a 'sunken' courtyard garden level to serve the new building. Parking would be to the rear of the building (beneath the sunken courtyard) with feature abtract breaks in the surface above to illuminate the space whilst also permitting potential for planting to grow through/between.
