Milton Abbey School Art
The existing Arts Building at Milton Abbey School was originally a stable block and blacksmiths serving the listed Mansion House. Located on grounds enjoying Ancient Monument status, proposals sought to minimise exterior changes whilst upgrading interior volumes. Associated with these aims - and forming the primary design element for the project - was the introduction of a dedicated exhibition and presentation space for both students and local resdients societies alike.

The RiB ARCHITECTURE design solution was to accommodate the existing Pottery studios and kiln room, using the resultant split level interior ((the stables being situated on a steeply sloping section of the campus) to create an open, light filled interior with 2 distinct areas. On the first foor level, existing art studios would be opened up to the gallery space - enabling a 2 storey volume to the front gallery. (see image 3 below). To the rear, the limited exterior space would accommodate a new courtyard with curved/stepped stone terracinng and area for sculture presentation beyond.
