Toad Cottage

Located on the outskirts of the market  town of Ringwood, Toad Cottage stood in the position of a former New Forest cottage. Falling within a sensitive position progressing out into the forest and surroundings, the planning context was reflective of this intermediate setting - recognising the particular requirements of development within the National Park itself.

Proposals sought to expand the existing property by converting the existing detached garage by adding a new first floor level and linking this new element to the existing cottage by means of a visually lightweight transparent link which was to form the new combined entry to the family home. This, in conjunction with expanding and rationalising previous works within the upper level of the host property, would then create the multi-generational family living scenario desired for the elderly owners and their expanded family.

To reflect the differing generations, materials proposed ranged from traditional render through to charcoal stained vertical cladding and stainless steel wrapped end gables.
