Pavilion in the Park

In my role as Design and Client Services Manager at City of Preston, I was asked to provide input into potential ways of invigorating the historic (and Grade 2 listed) Avenham/Miller Park. Positioned to the south of the inner city, the park was easily accessible on foot. My proposal sought to exploit this accessibility to entice city workers into the park before and after work (and primarily lunchtimes) via the introduction of a new cafe/venue to replace the exsting underused facility.

Based on a radial form, layered in structure to bear reference to the tree canopies of the surrounding landscape, the sketch proposals were used to promote a potential design compeition and consequent Heritage funding. Working closely with RIBA Competitions in Leeds, the competition was won by Ian McChesney (Architect) with Landscape by Fenella Griffin in 2005 with a soft, curved design echoing the sweep of both trees and landscape.
